8:31 am on 24 July 2011

Cambridge runner Nikki Hamblin has broken the New Zealand women's 1500 metre record, just hours after Nick Willis set a new record for the men's event.

In a fantastic day for New Zealand middle distance running, Hamblin broke her own national record by one point one one seconds in Barcelona, finishing eighth in an international field in a time of four minutes and four point eight two seconds.

Willis ran three minutes 31 point seven nine seconds in the 1500 metres at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco as he finished fourth, taking point three eight of a second off his own record set in 2006 in Paris.

Both runners are gearing up for the World Championships in Korea at the end of August.
