Wallabies crush Springboks to take first points

10:42 am on 25 July 2011

Australia has taken the first points in rugby's Tri Nations with a 39-20 win over South Africa in Sydney.

The Wallabies scored five tries to two and led 15-6 at half-time.

Impressive winger James O'Connor scored a try and landed five goals from six attempts for a 19-point contribution as the Wallabies put the second-string Springboks to the sword.

First -ive Quade Cooper toyed with the defence and sparked waves of Australian attacks as the Wallabies' big guns fired after missing last Sunday's dismal loss to Samoa.

The torrential rain that lashed Sydney during the week cleared to leave the ANZ Stadium surface - and a hearty 52,788-strong crowd - pleasantly dry and Australia's fleet-footed stars took full advantage.

Uncapped former Sharks lock Gerhard Mostert will join the Springbok squad in Sydney on Sunday to cover for a succession of injuries to lock forwards.
