Ben Campbell pulls out of US Amateur

New Zealand's number one amateur golfer Ben Campbell has withdrawn from the US Amateur to return home to have surgery on his foot.

The 19-year-old from Masterton had held hopes of replicating Rotorua's Danny Lee's successful tournament in 2008 but requires an operation to remove a painful bone growth on the side of his foot.

Campbell has endured a torrid season with a stomach bug on his flight to the UK, an ingrown toenail and now the abnormal bone growth in his foot.

The world number 48's now in doubt to play the Asian Amateur Championship in Singapore from late September.

Campbell finished in a share of fourth place at the Asian event last year and then went onto place fourth in the individual standings at the Eisenhower World Amateur Teams Championship in Argentina.
