Breakers star Kirk Penney is leaving the National Basketball League champions to take up a contract with a Spanish club.

Baloncesto Fuenlabrada has posted on its website that Penney's signed with the Madrid-based side, which competes in the top Spanish competition, Liga ACB.

And Breakers general manager Richard Clarke's confirmed the Tall Blacks captain's move.

Penney joined the Breakers in 2007 after two short stints in the NBA and two seasons in the Euroleague, playing a key role in the Auckland team's historic run to the Australian league title this season.

Penney leaves with the Tall Blacks next week for the Stankovic Cup tournament in China as well as tournaments in Macedonia and Turkey, before the Oceania Championships Olympic qualifiers in Australia.
