American rounds off world swimming champs campaign with fifth gold

8:10 am on 1 August 2011

The American swimmer Ryan Lochte rounded off an impressive world championship campaign with a fifth gold medal in the 400 metres individual medley, equalling compatriot Michael Phelps gold medal haul from 2009.

Lochte was named the male swimmer of the meeting for his performances, which included one of only two world record breaking swims in the 200 individual medley.

However the 26-year old was quick to play down suggestions that he's on the verge of taking over from Phelps as the world's biggest swimming star.
