Australian golf officials claim to have the "strongest ever" field for their National Open championship after contracting Tiger Woods to join a star-studded lineup at the Lakes course in Sydney in the second week of November.

Woods, who returns to tournament golf this weeek in Ohio, will challenge the likes of fellow Americans Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson, the defending champion Geoff Ogilvy, the rising Australian star Jason Day and Presidents Cup captains Greg Norman and Fred Couples.

Golf Australia boss Stephen Pitt is confident half a dozen more stars, mostly players competing for the International or US teams at the Presidents Cup in Melbourne the following week, will join the Open field.

Woods' only Australian Open appearance so far was in 1996 as a rookie professional when he finished 5th.
