India set to change rules to honour Tendulkar

The Indian government is considering a rule change to allow cricket star Sachin Tendulkar to receive the country's highest civilian award, for which sports stars are currently ineligible.

There have been growing calls in recent years to honour the record-breaking Tendulkar with the "Bharat Ratna", the Jewel of India award, and the government's Sports Minister has written to the home ministry suggesting an amendment that would make sportspeople such as Tendulkar eligible.

There have been just 41 recipients of the Bharat Ratna since it was established in 1955.
