World Cup puts paid to home Olympic qualifier for Tall Blacks

The Rugby World Cup has put paid to the Tall Blacks playing one of their Oceania Olympic qualifiers against Australia in New Zealand.

The Tall Black recent win in the Stankovic Cup in China has been a major confidence boost for the side ahead of next month's qualifiers in Melbourne Brisbane and Sydney.

Basketball New Zealand had hoped to host one of the matches but FIBA, the sport's international governing body, says the matches must be broadcast on television live and Basketball NZ chief executive Tim Hamilton says with the rugby world cup there's a shortage of TV crews.

Hamilton says despite their efforts they've been unable to resolve the situation and as a result, FIBA's ruled the games will be played in Australia.

The winner of the Oceania series will qualify for the London Games while the loser will contest another FIBA qualifying tournament early next year.
