North Harbour agree to release former All Black early

6:01 pm on 16 August 2011

The North Harbour Rugby chief executive Brett Hollister says an early release fee was the main issue which prevented mid-field back Luke McAlister heading overseas any earlier.

The former All Black has been granted an early release from his New Zealand and North Harbour playing contracts to allow him to join up with French club Toulouse.

Hollister says they've worked with the New Zealand Rugby Union to negotiate an appropriate release, including an early release fee, but he's still disappointed that McAlister wanted to leave early..

McAlister can leave North Harbour after their round 10 ITM Cup match against Counties Manukau tomorrow.

NZRU General Manager Professional Rugby Neil Sorensen says while it's a disappointing end to McAlister's career in New Zealand, they have agreed that this is the best outcome for everyone involved and they wish him well.
