The number 2 and 3 mens tennis players in the world, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, suffered surprise losses to inspired opponents in an entertaining quarter-finals day at the Cincinnati Open.

To the delight of a packed home crowd, American hard court specialist Mardy Fish beat Nadal for the first time in his career, 6-3 6-4, to book a spot in the semi-finals where he will face Britain's Andy Murray.

Then Federer was undone 6-2 7-6 by Czech Tomas Berdych, who after beating him twice last year is becoming something of a bogeyman for the Swiss.

Berdych will face world number one Novak Djokovic, who survived an early scare against France's Gael Monfils before recovering to win in 3 and extending his season record to 56 and 1.
