The Spanish football league will start this weekend following the settlement of a pay dispute that ended the first strike action in almost three decades.
Last week's first round of matches in the top two divisions was postponed because of haggling over issues including the value of a fund to cover unpaid player salaries at clubs who are struggling financially or have gone into administration.
A recent study published by the University of Barcelona accounting professor showed the 20 clubs in the top flight made a combined net loss of about 170 million dollars in the year to the end of June 2010.
Total debt stands at nearly 6 billion dollars, more than double revenue of 2.8 billion dollars.
Meanwhile Italy looks almost certain to face a players' strike after talks failed to produce an agreement between players and the league 48 hours before the scheduled start of the Serie A season.
