Germany's Marcel Kittel avoided a mass crash in the last kilometre to win stage seven of the Tour of Spain.

Slovakia's Peter Sagan was second and Oscar Freire of Spain was third in the bunch sprint which decided the 182.9-km stage from Almaden to Talavera de la Reina.

Some of the top overall contenders, including Italians Michele Scarponi and Vincenzo Nibali and Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez were caught up in a mass crash caused when American sprinter Tyler Farrar fell.

Sylvain Chavanel of France retained his overall lead.

The Tour of Spain finishes in Madrid on September the 11th.
