Kenya's Edna Kiplagat picked herself up after tripping over at a drinks station to win the women's marathon and claim the first gold medal at the world athletics championships at Daegu in South Korea.

The 31-year-old policewoman broke clear of Kenyans Priscah Jeptoo and Sharon Cherop over the last two kilometres to win her first world title in two hours 28 minutes and 43 seconds.

Jeptoo finished 17 seconds behind Kiplagat with Cherop third to ensure a first podium sweep in the event at the world championships.
