NZ women's pair retain world rowing title

The coach of the New Zealand women's pair of Rebecca Scown and Juliette Haigh believes the defence of their world rowing championship title is quite a remarkable feat.

The pair battled with the British for the entire race in Slovenia and managed to just get in front in the last few metres to win by 0.08 seconds.

Haigh missed three months training this year because of a back problem and coach John Robinson says they did really well to get up for the win.

The women's quad also won bronze finishing behind Germany and the United States.

But there was disappointment for the men's eight who missed out on qualification for the London Olympics at this regatta with fourth place in a B final that they had to win.

The men's lightweight pair were fourth.

The men's lightweight sculler Duncan Grant raced away to win his semi-final and will start as one of the medal favourites, while world champions Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan won their double scull semi.
