Welshman Dai Greene gave next year's Olympic hosts their first gold medal at the world athletics championships, powering home to win the 400 metres hurdles title in a thrilling finish.

Following earlier disappointments for the defending heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah in the 10-000 metres champion, Green was overwhelmed by his success as something of a dark horse in the event, despite good form in the Diamond League series.

The United States won three of the six gold medals on offer on the 6th day, including the womens 1500 metres, Kenya extended their dominance of the men's steeplechase, and South Africa's double-amputee Oscar Pistorius produced another momentous achievement, leading his 4 by 400 metres relay team to the final and a national record.
