Roger Federer's booked his place in the last 16 at the US tennis Open, the Swiss great beating Croatian Marin Cilic in four sets.

Federer took another step in his campaign for a record sixth US Open title despite the lanky 27th seed having his chances. But Cilic could convert only two of nine break-point chances against the third-seeded 30-year-old.

The Croat double-faulted at set point in the third set and never recovered.

Federer is looking to set an Open-era record with a sixth US crown. He currently is tied with Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras with five titles.

In the round of 16 Federer will face either Argentine Juan Monaco or Tommy Haas of Germany.

Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and top seed Caroline Wozniacki also progressed, though the Italian needed three sets to see off South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers.

The Danish world number one had no such problems with American Vania King, easing through to the fourth round 6-2 6-4.
