The New Zealand women's hockey team has beaten the United States for the first time since 2003, winning 2-1 in San Diego today.

The match was played in 25 degree heat and is the first game in five match series.

Coach Mark Hager wasn't impressed with New Zealand's efforts saying the Black Sticks basic skills were poor.

Game two is on Wednesday morning.

The United States are ranked 13th in the world and the Black Sticks sixth.
