India lose Champions Trophy hosting rights

6:25 am on 8 September 2011

India, for many years the powerhouse of world hockey, has lost the hosting rights for this year's Champions Trophy because of an internal power struggle for control of the sport.

In announcing the decision to move the tournament from India, the International Hockey Federation rejected a Sports Minihjstry-brokered peace agreement between Hockey India, and the Indian Hockey Federation, saying there could not be more than one federation running the game.

It's understood the FIH has approached New Zealand as a possible host nation for the elite eight-team event in December, and the new venue is expected to be named next week.
