The New Zealand swimming team has taken its tally to eight medals at the Youth Commonwealth Games on the Isle of Man, with one day remaining.

Counties Manukau swimmer Corey Main continued his golden run on the second night of finals, the 16-year-old winning his second gold medal in a record-breaking effort in the pool, adding the 50 metre backstroke crown to the 100 metre backstroke victory on the first day.

Main went under the New Zealand age group record to top the qualifiers in the morning heats then went faster again in the final to record 25.24 seconds for victory and his second national record in a day.

His Howick Pakuranga clubmate Alex Hancock won his second bronze medal in the 50 metre butterfly while Canterbury 16-year-old Matthew Hutchins earned a second silver medal in the 1500 metre freestyle.

The fourth edition of the Youth Commonwealth Games has 1,000 athletes from 70 countries competing in seven sports, with the swim team part of a 29-strong New Zealand team including athletes, boxers and gymnasts.
