The New Zealand men's and women's basketball teams will have to wait until next year for another crack at Olympic qualification after their Australian counterparts took an unassailable 2-0 lead in their best of three Oceania series.
The Boomers and Opals booked their tickets for the London Olympics in contrasting styles against the Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns in game two in Brisbane on Friday night, the women doing it easy with a 92-73 win before the men needed a final quarter surge to kill off the Tall Blacks.
Trailing by two points at the end of the third quarter and the game in the balance, Australia's men dug deep in every facet of the game - rebounding, scoring and defence - to see off the stubborn Tall Blacks 81-64.
They limited New Zealand to just 10 points for the final term - the bulk of which came after Australia's sensational 23-3 run which secured passage to London in the most emphatic style.
Boomer Brad Newley top-scored for his side with 12 points.
The New Zealand skipper Kirk Penney led the way for his side with 17 points.
Both Australian teams have now qualified for next year's Games, regardless of the results in game three in Sydney on Sunday.
