Tony Readings has been appointed coach of the New Zealand women's football team, replacing John Herdman.

Herdman announced earlier this month he was stepping down from the role he's held for five years, to take charge of Canada's national women's team.

Readings, assisted Herdman in New Zealand's world cup campaigns in 2007 and 2011 and the Beijing Olympics and is also currently head coach of the New Zealand under-20 women's team.

Readings first major assignment will be the Oceania Olympic qualifying series in March.
