English football's most expensive man, Fernando Torres, was left to rue an absolute howler in front of goal as champions Manchester United climbed to the top of English football's Premier League table with a 3-2 victory over the Blues at Old Trafford.
United had taken a 3-0 half-time lead only for Torres to snatch one back for Chelsea with his first goal of the season.
However his improved performance was scarred by his astonishing late miss when he shot wide of an open goal after skipping around United goalkeeper David de Gea.
It spared some embarrassment for United striker Rooney, who earlier missed a penalty when he slipped as he ran up to take his kick, but left the Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas to lament what could have been.
In this morning's other matches Manchester City were held to a 2-all draw at Fulham while nine-man Liverpool were thumped 4-0 by Tottenham.
