New Zealand triathlete Andrea Hewitt has won the Yokohama ITU event by 14 seconds over Australia's Emma Moffatt, with another New Zealander, Kate McIlroy, in third place.

McIlroy was a further 14 seconds behind for her first ever world championship podium, while it's Hewitt's second straight win after she took out the season-ending grand final in Beijing to finish second overall for 2011.

Hewitt won Yokohama in a time of one minute and 59 seconds in hot conditions - the temperature's expected to reach 33 degrees during this afternoon's men's race.

Nicky Samuels finished 33rd and Debbie Tanner withdrew before the finish.

The event forms part of next season's ITU series after it was postponed in May, following the Japan earthquake and tsunami.
