Auckland depart Champions League T20 in qualifying

6:54 am on 21 September 2011

The Auckland cricketers have been knocked out of the Champions League Twenty20 competition in their final qualifying match, losing to English side Somerset by four wickets at Hyderabad.

But the Aces only fell on the final ball after being restricted to just 125 with Lou Vincent's 47 the highest score of the day.

Batsman Steve Snell got Somerset home with a 24-ball knock of 34 but Aces paceman Michael Bates took his second wicket on the penultimate ball with a runout, leaving Somerset captain Alfonso Thomas the task of hitting the winning run off the only delivery he'd face.

Thomas was up to the task and the Aucklanders head home from the lucrative tournament.
