New Zealand riders Jesse Sergent and Jack Bauer achieved solid top-20 finishes in an elite field at yesterday's men's time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Copenhagen.

Sergent was 18th fastest while Bauer was one spot behind, coming in just over 58 minutes.

Both BikeNZ riders averaged a shade under 48kph for the 46.4km journey.

Germany's Tony Martin claimed the overall honours, coming in under 53 minutes.

Jack Bauer says he's pleased with his performance given the technical nature of the course and strong winds.

Bauer says his success on the roads this year had come in shorter events which forced a re-evaluation of his goals for yesterday's time trial.

He says he feels good ahead of the men's elite road race on Monday where he will ride in support of kiwi sprinters Julian Dean and Greg Henderson.
