Kenya's Patrick Makau has dethroned Ethiopia's king of the roads Haile Gebrselassie, winning the Berlin marathon in world record time - two hours, three minutes and 38 seconds, slashing 21 seconds off the Ethiopian's previous record despite running on his own for the final 10 kilometres.

Gebrselassie, who has been suffering for some time from an exercise-induced asthma complaint, pulled out of the race with about five kilometres to run.
