Cycling future of national road champion in doubt after crash

The cycling future of national road champion Cath Cheatley is in doubt after she was badly hurt in a crash while competing in Taranaki at the weekend.

Cheatley suffered multiple fractures of her hip and after initial surgery at Taranaki Base Hospital has been flown to Auckland for further surgery.

She crashed near Kaponga in the Around the Mountain Race in Taranaki on Saturday.

Cheatley, the 2010 US National Series champion and reigning national road champion, had only returned recently to racing after an accident-marred season in the United States, including breaking her pelvis in an accident in June.

Her husband Dayle Cheatley says it's too early to speculate about her future in the sport but is hopeful she'll make a full recovery.
