Newcomers shine for Silver Ferns

11:10 pm on 3 October 2011

New Zealand's easily beaten England 62-40 in Auckland in the first of a two-test netball series with both sides using new-look teams.

The Silver Ferns started faster and harder and led throughout, although England's high turnover rate slowed in a more competitive second half.

Both coaches introduced newcomers with injuries, retirement and work commitments ruling out the likes of Silver Ferns captain Casey Williams and midcourter Temepara George as well as English defenders Geva Mentor and Sonia Mkoloma.

Goal attack Anna Thompson was the only surprise in the Silver Ferns starting line-up, which changed at half-time when she and goalshoot Irene van Dyke were replaced by Maria Tutaia and Cathrine Latu with the hosts ahead 34-18.

Latu started well with a long range shot and she finished a popular and long-awaited debut with 17 goals from 17 attempts.

The second test is in Invercargill on Thursday night.
