The New Zealand driver Scott Dixon's slim chance of winning the IndyCar championship has been quashed despite a third place finish at the latest round of the IndyCar series in Kentucky.

Ed Carpenter won the race, with Dixon's team-mate Dario Franchitti reclaiming the series lead after finishing second.

Frachitti now has 573 points and leads championship rival Will Power by 18 with one race remaining.

Dixon is third in the standings, 55 points behind Franchitti.

Despite being eliminated from the championship hunt, Dixon can take some solace in winning the AJ Foyt Trophy for most points won on the Oval tracks, beating Franchitti by 10 points.

Dixon and Franchitti now each have nine podium finishes in 2011.

The final round of the series takes place in Las Vegas on October the 16th.
