Rugby World Cup organisers have begun their final push for ticket sales with the news that they're within $6.5 million of achieving their target of just under $270 million.

Chief executive Martin Snedden says it's an excellent situation in the face of major challenges including the Christchurch earthquake and the difficult economic climate, and with the eight playoff matches to come, four of which have been sold out.

They've budgeted for a $39 million loss which is being underwritten by the government and New Zealand Rugby Union.

Almost 1.1 million fans attended the 40 pool matches.
