Jets players put aside coach's sacking

5:10 pm on 5 October 2011

The Newcastle Jets football captain Joe Wheelhouse says the team is focussing on Saturday's A-League season opener against Melbourne Heart and put aside the dumping of coach Branko Culina.

The club is also asking Football Federation Australia to set aside the contract with his son Jason Culina, who is unlikely to play for the Jets because of a knee injury.

Just hours after attending the Jets season launch yesterday, Culina was given his marching orders by officials, a move supported by billionaire owner Nathan Tinkler.

The Jets did not reveal the reasons behind the sacking of the coach, though there are suggestions the club may have thought Culina knew more than he let on about the nature of his son's injury before he was signed on a deal reportedly worth 3.3 million dollars.
