The Whanganui provincial rugby team's beaten East Coast 30-10 at home to win their third Meads Cup in four years.

Captain Rua Tipoki was one of three East Coast players yellow carded in the game and he admits ill discipline cost the team, with six penalties from the boot of Whanganui first five Mark Davis.

Tipoki also says that match is definitely the last in his long career.

Whanganui led 9-7 at half-time.

Poverty Bay convincingly beat South Canterbury to take the Lochore Cup in the other Heartland Championship final at Timaru's Alpine Energy Stadium.

South Canterbury could do little to hold off a dominant Poverty Bay who continued their great form to win the Lochore Cup final 49-22.
