Toovey says he was always in line for the top job at the Sydney club, with Hasler's move simply speeding up the process.
Following a time-honoured tradition at the club, Manly promoted from within by giving Toovey his first NRL coaching gig, a move the club champion hopes will stop the Sea Eagles from falling apart.
With dual-premiership winning mentor Hasler - arguably the club's most successful coach - joining rivals Canterbury at the end of 2012, the Sea Eagles board moved quickly to offer Toovey a two-year contract from 2013.
Manly hope the move will help regain some control, after Hasler's decision triggered `get out' clauses for a number of players, prompting suggestions there could be a mass exodus.
Toovey, who has been a part of Hasler's coaching staff since 2004, is confident his appointment will convince players to stay loyal to the maroon and white.
