Rafael Nadal has crashed out of the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament, beaten 7-6 6-3 by Germany's Florian Mayer.

The 15th seed, who won his first tour title in Bucharest last week, says it's definitely the biggest win of his career, and the defending champion Andy Murray is now the top surviving seed. The Scot has won 21 of his last 22 matches.

In another upset the Australian Mathew Ebden beat the eighth seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon to make the quarter-finals.

But the rising Australian teenage star Bernard Tomic went out to the 12th seed from Ukraine Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Spain's David Ferrer has reached the quarter-finals, making him the fifth player to qualify for the season-ending eight-man ATP World tour finals, featuring the world's top eight singles players for the year.
