Triple international Dick Thornett dies

7:14 am on 14 October 2011

The Australian sporting great Dick Thornett, part of a select breed of sportsmen to have represented his country in three sports, has died aged 71.

A member of one of Australia's great sporting families, Thornett played water polo for his country at the 1960 Rome Olympics before joining his brother John in a short but very successful rugby career, before switching to league in 1963 alongside another brother, Ken.

Dick Thornett's death comes a week before he and his brothers were due to be honoured at a tribute dinner at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
