Gold Coast event in doubt after Indy car death

6:48 am on 18 October 2011

A question mark remains over this weekend's Gold Coast 600 field after the tragic death yesterday of the British IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon.

But the man who had been set to team up with Wheldon in the V8 Supercars round - Holden star James Courtney - has vowed to pay tribute to his good mate by racing on the tough street circuit.

28 international drivers, including six Indy car racers, were set to feature this weekend but organisers say they'll understand if there are withdrawals out of respect for Wheldon.

A special service for Wheldon will be held on Saturday at the Gold Coast track.
