Football fans in Manchester will be happy, with the city's two clubs finally getting their first wins of the Champions League campaign with United beating Romania minnows Otelul Galati 2-nil and City edging Villarreal 2-1.

United had to rely on two Wayne Rooney second-half penalties - making him the highest ever scoring Englishman in the competition with 26 goals.

United, though, still trail Benfica on the table, the impressive Portuguese outfit maintaining their unbeaten record in all competitions with a 2-nil win away at Basel.

City got another boost as group leaders Bayern Munich drew 1-all away at second-placed Napoli.

Real Madrid's perfect start to Europe's premier club competition continued as they steamrollered French side Lyon 4-nil to make it three wins from three matches.
