Australia thump South Africa in one day opener

11:32 am on 20 October 2011

A superb century partnership between Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke has manufactured a comprehensive 93-run victory for Australia over South Africa in a rain-affected start to the one-day series in Centurion.

In a revised match of 29 overs for each side under the Duckworth-Lewis system, Australia managed to reach 183, but had their total readjusted to mean South Africa required 223 for victory.

But the Australian attack, led by three wickets each to Pat Cummins and Mitchell Johnson, worked hard to spark a Proteas collapse and bowl them out in the 22nd over for only 129 runs.
