The Melbourne Victory footballers have beaten the Wellington Phoenix 2-1 in their A-League match in the capital.

The Phoenix dominated the shooting in the first half with 11 shots on goal to the Victory's three, but it was the visitors who went ahead in the 42nd minute through the Otorohanga-born Socceroos veteran Archie Thompson.

The second half turned pear-shaped for the Phoenix in the 68th minute when All Whites defender Ben Sigmund was red-carded for being the last man as he brought Thompson down in the area, Carlos Hernandez converting the penalty as the previously-scoreless Victory doubled their goal tally for the season.

The Phoenix clawed a goal back through Dani Sanchez with 19 minutes left.

The Victory climb three places into fourth on the A-League table, above the Phoenix who drop to sixth.
