The New Zealand rugby union says it would have preferred to sign Sonny Bill Williams to a longer term contract but he wasn't interested.
Williams confirmed yesterday that he's re-signed with the NZRU for a further year and will play for the Chiefs in the Super 15 in 2012.
The New Zealand rugby union's general manager of professional rugby Neil Sorenson concedes the negotiations were drawn out as they had hoped to have all the All Blacks contracts resolved before the world cup.
He says it was made clear by Williams management that they wouldn't consider a deal beyond 2012.
The Chiefs coach Dave Rennie believes Williams relationship with Wayne Smith was the key component ins his decision to spend the Super rugby season with the Hamilton-based franchise.
