The New Zealand IndyCar driver Wade Cunningham says he thought he was going to die when he was involved in the crash which claimed the life of British driver Dan Wheldon in Las Vegas last month.

In the early stages of the Las Vegas 300 race contact between Cunningham and another car set off the 15-car crash.

Wheldon died when his car travelling at over 300 kilometres an hour hit the circuit wall.

Cunningham's currently back home in Auckland for a short break before returning to the United States to prepare for next season.

Cunningham says the crash is a blur but he's relieved to have been able to walk away.
