Adelaide United's Antony Golec is in hot water with his club after delivering a homophobic rant at the A-League referee who reduced Melbourne Victory to nine men on Saturday night.

The former Sydney FC defender used his Twitter account to label Ben Williams the "worst referee ever", after the official ejected two Victory players in the first half of their 2-2 draw with Brisbane Roar.

Golec then went an inflammatory step further, tweeting another derogatory comment about Williams, this time using homosexual references as terms of abuse.

Golec, yet to make his debut for Adelaide, has been ordered by his club to write a letter of apology to Williams and the Reds also plan to heavily punish the 21-year-old on Monday.
