Junior Black Sticks draw with Malaysia

8:57 am on 7 November 2011

The New Zealand Junior men's hockey team have continued their unbeaten run at the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia after recording a 1-all draw with the hosts.

The Junior Black Sticks took an early through a Kane Russell penalty corner goal in the eighth minute, but Malaysia responded with their own penalty corner strike not long before half time to even things up at the break.

Both teams had plenty of chances in the second stanza but desperate defence kept the scores level.

New Zealand turned over possession too frequently during the second spell, and missed a golden opportunity to take the match with a penalty corner right on full time.

The Junior Black Sticks are currently in third place at the six team tournament.

The Sultan of Johor Cup runs until Sunday with New Zealand's next game against Australia tomorrow night.
