The five time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe's return to top flight swimming has suffered a setback, failing to qualify for the final of his specialist event, the 100m freestyle, at a world cup meet in Beijing.
Thorpe finished fifth in his heat and was only 15th fastest overall.
