Huge gallery overwhelms Open officials

Security officials and marshals struggled to control the huge gallery that followed golf's former world number one Tiger Woods early in the opening round at the Australian Open in Sydney.

Australian No.1 Jason Day and veteran Robert Allenby were little more than afterthoughts in the same playing group.

The gallery ropes seemed to be little more than a suggestion on the second hole as hundreds of fans spilled into a no-go area to the left of the fairway on a humid afternoon at The Lakes.

Spectators were not loud or obnoxious and it was almost eerily quiet at times but

one veteran American golf writer described the scenes as chaotic as tour officials seemed to be caught by surprise.

Woods didn't seemed bothered though, making a steady start before moving to three under through 12 holes.
