Local swimmers Kane Radford and Cara Baker have won the Harbour Crossing race in Auckland, the opening leg of the Ocean Swim series.

Rotorua's Radford pipped a stellar field including leading Australian Trent Grimsey to win the 2.9-kilometre open water swim from Bayswater on the North Shore to the Viaduct.

Queensland-based Baker fought off defending champion Charlotte Webby of New Plymouth to claim the women's title among 1300 participants in excellent conditions.

The leading swimmers are using the series towards the New Zealand Open Water championships in January, with the top two men and women moving on to the final Olympic qualifying event in Portugal.
