The Asian football heavyweights South Korea have been stunned 2-1 by lowly Lebanon, leaving them on the brink of advancing to the fourth round of World Cup qualifying.

146th ranked Lebanon thrilled 40-thousand home fans in Beirut with a goal in the 5th minute, and a penalty 15 minutes before halftime ended the scoring.

South Korea had beaten Lebanon 6-nil at home in September.

The two sides are locked on 10 points from five matches in Group B, and they're favourites to win their final matches in the group.

In Pyongyang, North Korea upset Japan 1-nil in a tempestous match, though Japan had aleady qualified for the next round.

Australia struggled to beat Thailand 1-nil in Bangkok though the Socceroos have qualified for the next round, winning their group with a game to spare.
