Team New Zealand has reached the semi-finals of the Match Racing Championships at the America's Cup World Series in San Diego.

Although Dean Barker and crew were only fifth of the nine racing in the third and final pool race, it was still good enough when combined with their second and third places - putting them one point behind Energy Team in second overall.

The French boat won the last race to top the table at the end of the seeding races with three finishes inside the top five.

Oracle Racing Spithill, plagued by penalties and starting trouble all day, recovered strongly in each race to hold onto third place and the last direct entry to the semis.

The remaining six teams will be paired up to race in Friday's qualifying matches, competing in a knockout format to earn the fourth semi-final berth.
