Despite bowing out of contention in the match racing semi-finals in San Diego, Team New Zealand has retained its lead in the America's Cup World Series championship with a third place finish.

The team bounced back from defeat to James Spithill's Oracle 4 to beat Swedish boat Artemis convincingly by 39 seconds in the race for third.

Dean Barker won the start and controlled the race from the front, leaving the Swedes without space to move.

After three regattas, Dean Barker and crew have 27 points for a one-point lead over Oracle 4, who beat the French Energy team in two of the three match racing final.

Artemis is third on 23 points in the standings ahead of Team Korea on 20 points.
