The Otago golfer Mahal Pearce has finished in fifth place at the NSW Open on the PGA Tour of Australasia after shooting a three under par 67, the lowest round of the final day.

The 2003 New Zealand Open champion had a strong finish at the Newcastle Golf Club birdieing three of the final four holes before bogeying the 18th.

The 35-year-old finished four shots behind Australian champion Adam Crawford, who fired a one under par 69 to win the title by one shot from Paul Donahoo.

Pearce now heads to the Australian PGA Championship at Coolum this week before returning home for the NZ Open in Christchurch.

Meanwhile the Masterton golfer Ben Campbell finished one shot adrift of the leading amateur title.

The 20-year-old had two over par 72 to finish in a share of 12th, one behind Matt Steiger who fired a 68 to take the amateur honours.
